Thank you Stepping Stones
At the beginning of 2011, it was suggested by my advisor at the job centre that I be referred to a project called Stepping Stones. I was told that they offer advice and guidance for people needing support relating to employment, education and training. Stepping Stones were able to offer me support in learning basic IT skills. It was felt that the one to one sessions they offered would help me gain confidence and allow me to start using computers at a pace that suited me.
After only one month with Stepping Stones, my job centre advisor noticed a real difference in my confidence levels, and could see the project was really helping me. When I first started I didn’t know how to turn a computer on, but now I am using spreadsheets on excel, and have my own laptop at home.
I have been receiving weekly support from Stepping Stones for the past 11 months, but I am now starting a work programme called ‘In Training’ to help me further my computer studies, and aid me in looking for work. I feel ready to move on from Stepping Stones as it has given me the confidence and knowledge I needed to progress with future courses, and future employment.
I am very pleased with the support I received, and would recommend the service to anyone interested in computers. If you are worried, or scared of using computers, you are never too old to begin. I was 59 years old when I first started at Stepping Stones, and I never dreamt I would start using computers at this time of my life.
I am very glad that I accessed the Stepping Stones project, and I am very happy that the support was available when I needed, and free of charge.
